That was a lot! :) so you're saying I should embrace UGC, I think I'm staring to become a part of it with some of my films shorts, micro shorts. I guess I originally and still do to some extent see them as more like movies than UGC, but I guess they can be both? Is the only difference that I haven't posted them on social media or YouTube? ( which I am considering with a few ) as opposed to going to film festivals and seeing them on the big screen? Maybe I bristle too much at the word "content" maybe I m just yelling at clouds now:) in either case, dig the post. Gives me more to think about as I contribute to green light myself. Cheers!
Thanks for this. I see so many people approaching their creative careers through tunnel vision: “I’m either a filmmaker or a TV writer. If it’s not on one of those screens I don’t have any interest in making it.”
And the reason I’m so passionate about this stuff is that I used to think this way too and it was so limiting and demoralizing when it seemed like neither door was available to me.
I think the larger point I aim to make with this post (and all my posts) is to broaden the worldview. If you have access to a stage, think of a story you can tell on the stage. If you have access to camera gear and YouTube, find a story to tell with that. Try to see the world through the lens of possibility instead of limitation.
Totally. That's my main takeaway. I'm fortunate enough to still be in LA, I have lots of talented friends that I've met out here, most whom I have started to get to know in the last 5 years. The previous 5 I was mostly in my cave churning out pilots I was trying to sell:) . We all have gear. And we all have know-how and my conversations in the last year or so have been, let's make this cool thing. You do stunts ? Let's make this 2 min stunt scene and I'll craft a story. Or I know unreal engine and have a greenscreen sheet hanging in my back yard let's makes 3 min sci fi. Even this week, it was a conversation of creating a writer's room with some fellow tv writers and make some episodic vertical shorts ( this I think we will do) So now I just May start putting that stuff on the "stage" as you said. My YouTube channel or my tik tok. I've slowly put things on my IG but mostly some bts and a clip here but not start to finish. Maybe it's time...
This is brilliant, I love it. I know several people who are organizing something similar because they’re surrounded by talented creatives who are hungry to make something and have been told “no” by gatekeepers one too many times.
